There are times when you don’t know exactly why you happen to be in the right place at exactly the right moment. When this serendipity happens, you are extremely grateful and somewhat amazed that the universe provided. My fur friend could have been seriously injured and, potentially, set fire to the house had he run madly about trying to escape his burning tail.
Picture an early morning. You’ve barely gotten out of bed and found something better and warmer than your jammies, house coat and slippers to take the puppy outside to potty. (We have tons of snow!) You return, put on the kettle for tea and proceed to fill the sink to wash up a few dishes leftover from last night’s snacks. You put out wet food for the cat, the pup’s breakfast and start tidying up before making your tea. The cat decides to sneak, unnoticed, over to the corner of the counter where his is NOT ALLOWED.
Moments later you smell the horrible and undeniable stench of burning hair! The cat has planted himself on the counter with his very fluffy tail in close proximity to the burner upon which your tea kettle is heating. His tail is beginning to catch fire. Fortunately for everyone he hasn’t yet realized he is about to be on fire. You grab him and quickly plant him and his smouldering tail into the sink full of dishwater. It all happens too quickly for him to strenuously object. The fire is now out. The cat is sincerely unimpressed with his wet tail and butt. You ignore his complaints as you dry his back end and attempt to evaluate the damage to him. The horrible smell of burning hair is dissipating and you are, for the most part, relieved, even though your heart is pounding!
Closer inspection reveals that the once very fluffy tail is now somewhat less fluffy with singe marks. The cat himself is unharmed. Whew!! Close call!!!
Your reward for saving your furry friend? He is totally unimpressed with your being the cause of his wet tail and butt. He stalks off to dry himself thoroughly and ignores you. You think about how frightening it could have been if you hadn’t realized he was about to burst into flames and run through the house potentially setting fire to everything in his desperation to escape his burning tail.
Hours later you are delighted he is safe and sound… and he is still completely unimpressed. That’s gratitude for you.
